yesterday anja spent an hour at the sink

making suds

painting suds with a paintbrush on the faucet.

then she wanted a foam brush

the biggest we have

to paint her hair

with a tupperware of water.

then she saw the foam brush

and wanted to tear it into shreds

to see what was inside.

she dunked the foam bits in a tupperware of water

shook shook shook it

spinning in circles

said she wanted to see what would happen to the foam bits

if kept in water

and shook all night

(only she didn’t have a machine to shake them all night).

this is engagement

outside the rigidity

and plans

of school

and adult minds

where paint brushes

and foam brushes

are set up with paper

and paint

for you-know-what.
